HipHop ist eine kulturelle Bewegung von schwarzen Großstadt-Kids. Als Ausdrucksform für Selbstdarstellung und soziale Reflektion urbanen Lebens hat HipHop seine Roots in der oralen afro-amerikanischer Erzähltradition.
Seit den Anfängen von HipHop waren weiblichen DJs an der Konstruktion und Entwicklung dieses internationalen Musikgenres beteiligt. Mistress X will diese bisher unerzählte Geschichte dokumentieren. Weibliche HipHop Artists und ihr ungewöhnlicher Beitrag zu diesem musikalischen Stil hinter dem eine multi-millionen Industrie steht die von Männern dominiert wird. Unter einer Gender-Perspektive wird diese oft ignorierte Geschichte beleuchtet. Mistress X will diesen im Underground und Mainstream aktiven Frauen eine unzensierte Plattform bieten.

Hip Hop is a cultural movement of black urban youth. As a constantly evolving form of self- expression and social reflection of contemporary urban life, it is rooted in the oral tradition of African-American story telling. Since the inception of Hip Hop, women DJ's have been vital participants in the construction and development of this international musical genre.
Mistress X will document this untold story, spotlighting women hip-hop artists and their unique contribution to the musical form as they operate and contend with a predominantly male-dominated multi-million dollar industry. While excavating the history of unsung women dj's and charting the course of the hip hop movement from a gendered point of view, Mistress X seeks to provide an uncensored platform for these underground and mainstream women artists who have been transforming their self-images within the mainstream global Hip Hop movement.
